Introspection is really the key here. In meditation you observe yourself in a totally different light.
You begin to observe yourself, your character, from the outside: your actions, thoughts, and emotions are assessed in a detached way. Your energy centres all correspond, not only to your physical organs, but also to the qualities of your personality.
Understanding these centres, and how to clear them, essentially helps you understand yourself better: it helps you recognise that certain actions harm you, teaches you how to refrain from such activity and, consequently, helps you develop your character's full potential.
